Re: Women really get worked up about baby names
[ QUOTE ]
My first reaction to Oscar was "ugh," but it's growing on me. I guess my reaction probably stems from the fact that I'm Jewish, and with Jews, pretty much any name that is different/gentile sounding/yuppie sounding is frowned upon. For our child, we wanted the first name to start with an "A" to honor my wife's late father. We had the first and last name picked out for a boy (middle name was after one of my grandfathers), but it took us a while to settle on a girl's name, and as fate would have it, we had a girl. We chose Alena because a) it started with an "A" and b) we liked it. I guess the usual spelling is "Alaina," but we thought the one we chose looked better. Oddly (to us) tons of people think the spelling is strange, although it seemed pretty normal to us (it's not like we had never seen it before). Even more strange is that lots of people can't figure out how to pronounce it based on the spelling. It's UH-LAY-NUH. People have pronounced it UH-LEN-UH and UH-LON-UH. Even AY-LEN-UH. WTF? FWIW, I call her Lainie (although I'm not sure how I should spell it) and Lanes. [/ QUOTE ] It's a pretty name but she's going to have a lot of 'splainin' to do over the course of her life. My cousin is named "Alana" (sounds like Atlanta) and nobody ever gets it right. |

Re: Women really get worked up about baby names
d: "A girl named Patterson would be almost guaranteed to become hot." Wrong. If she becomes hot, she'll stay being called Patterson. If she is not that hot, her name will become Pat or Patty. As for Alena, it's obviously "uh-lee-nuh."
gump: I had a good friend named Ulysses. He was a big Germanic-looking swimmer dude. Name is great if your son turns out like that. If he's a small dude, not so much. |

Re: Women really get worked up about baby names
I would pronounce the first A in Alena like the A in paw. Spanish speakers would, too. I think the name should have been spelled Alina. Much clearer and somehow looks better. I'd pronounce Alena like Elena, but starting with an Aw.

Re: Women really get worked up about baby names
Since when is it cool to try and give your kid some ridiculous unique name? There's no reason to saddle a kid with Blaze or Lee-Lee or Camden [censored] New Jersey, or some misspelled monstrosity like Makynzie.
It's like some competition parents have to see who can get away with naming their kid the weirdest or most "new" thing. which is sweet, because by the time I'm old enough to want kids I can just call them Edward or Catherine and people will be like "hey there's a normal name! what a breath of fresh air" P.S. I know a kid named "sweety" except her parents spelt it "sweaty." Poor kid has to go through life with everyone calling her sweaty because her parents were tards. And that's why you give your kid a normal name. |

I think some of this stuff is proof that parents see their kids as objects.

Also, I have a friend that I desperately tried to talk out of naming her kid "Blaze", with no success. L [/ QUOTE ] Good god, I know a little douche named Blaze. He's just set up for a life of mockery. I don't think there is a name with more perceived 'cool' to it that is so not cool. The 'Perceived Cool':'Actually Gay' ratio is off the charts. |
