Default Beliefs of Poker Players

I don't really know how to title this post but I'm curious about the mentality the poker community has in regard to different races, gays etc. I bring this up after reading 2+2 and some blogs that make me think poker players, specifically young online ones, are conservative and closed-minded. For instance, koolcatkass, a blogger on sngicons, makes some pretty offensive posts:

"I get a call from Joey at 7 while I'm eating dinner with my parents, saying the movers are at his apartment and of course they can't find building 11. Come to find out they can barely speak English, so I cut dinner short and rush over to Joey's to direct these guys to the garage that I left open for them.

I thought to myself, this is just one more reason why it's a bad idea to hire Illegal Mexicans. Boy did I feel stupid when the mover's were actually white guys with Russian accents and not stupid Mexicans at all.

The fact that they were Russian still pissed me off however, I mean why would you hire a White guy to do a job that was meant for African American’s. Though they don’t speak proper English, most American’s can still decipher Ebonics, and physical labor is in their blood for go sakes."

He also made a rant post against illegal immigrants which included, "They are also Catholic, and therefore they breed like rabbits."

I'm not saying he is the smartest person, (who uses an 's to pluralize a noun?) but he is good friends w/ high stakes sng pro bigjoe2003 and the fact that the owners of sngicons let him post this kind of material (I'll ignore that this is a poor business decision) makes me think they have the same mentality. Again this post is directed toward the entire online poker community, I just used sngicons as an example. Thoughts?

I think the average online pro is not conservative and close-minded. You have found exactly one player who is. This doesn't make sense.

I've seen this mentality many times, I've just been able to remember and directly quote one who is.

conservative and closed-minded?

I think there are some conservative values that are commom amongst most people that have $, I don't understand the closemindedness you elude to, maybe you're just in the wrong forums. NVG and BBV are not a representative sample of 2+2.

For most of the kids here, NVG is about one-upping one another and making attempts at being witty to get noticed. In our PC society the line between humor and racism/sexism/(pick an ism) is very narrow so most of these attention seekers do not know when they have crossed the line that others may find excessive.

The mods are pretty quick to squash any perceived racism on the board but seem to give a pass when it comes to the rampant sexism in NVG and occasional gay bashing. So, it is all about the climate.

I would not take ANYTHING you read in NVG to mean poker players, in general, have shared beliefs related to human nature and respect based on race or sexual orientation. Most of the people here are decent.

Interesting equation:

"conservative"="close-minded"=whatever this imbecile is.

Nice job. You have managed to equate people who might think differently than you with people who can barely think at all, unless it's a sng donkament.
