Default IKnow Why the Caged Bird Sings

I have a question for some of you book people.
What characters do you think serve as a posititive role model for Maya and why? How do you think Maya comes to her conclusions about the strength of black women?
This is a pretty interesting book, and I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.

I've never read the book, but I've always wondered - Why does the caged bird sing? Being in a cage would suck.

Always look on the bright side of life.

Even if you're in a cage.

I didn't read it. But they made it into a tv movie when I was kid. This was back when parents could safely assume that anything on tv was appropriate for youngsters.

I was one disturbed youngster for a while.

Same reason the free bird sings, birds are programmed to sing. The thing about the caged bird is, it isn't doing them any good, but they do it anyway because it's all they know how to do.
I read this and I remember rape, but no corn cob. Maybe I stopped before that happened.
