Convincing Family about Poker
Hi,
I'm 19 and Ive been doing this poker thing awhile now on Full Tilt. My parents are against the thing and say they want me to focus on college. Which is currently off till like aug 20. They say you can't win at this poker thing. They want me to empty my account. I am winning player. I have a hard time convincing them about this poker thing, as they are very narrow minded and don't like changing there views. They call poker call gambling and say it doesnt't happen in the movies etc etc. Anyone have any recomendations for me? I would like to keep playing poker. Ideas? Thanks |

Re: Convincing Family about Poker
Other people on this forum have mentioned getting part-time jobs to appease the parents (who are usually putting a roof over your head). This may be a good idea, but I don't know if it will work in your case. Are you planning on playing "full-time" this summer?

Re: Convincing Family about Poker
tell them that you've already been playing for X months and won Y dollars and that it won't interfere with college because you're just going to play in your free time in summer.

I told my parents I wanted job couple weeks ago but didnt really look for one etc. I found a couple but I dont want to do any physical work for my job so I didnt get them. |

Re: Convincing Family about Poker
After my parents heard (and saw evidence) I won $6000 at a casino tourney before the end of school last year they quit bitching about me playing poker.

Re: Convincing Family about Poker
Do what I do and slyly convince a parent (usually the dad) to try playing online. Even if he sucks at it and doesn't win, he'll at least be somewhat on your side since he plays too and doesn't wanna come across as a hypocrite.

My friend's parents were like this. Afraid of the whole poker thing, until they saw his winnings. But my mom was the complete opposite. She seemed ok with it when she thought I just played baby stakes with my friends, but then freaked out when she found out how much I had won. It doesn't really compute. |

Re: Convincing Family about Poker
My mum was dead against it until an uncle came to stay for a week, he'd been an online pro for a year and he helped convince her a little. Then after a while when I kept mentioning my wins (and obv not mentioning any losses) she slowly became quite happy with it. Now almost every day she asks me what I've won for the day.
I continually said that I wasn't planning on making this my job too, and that I was doing it for the easy money and wasn't staking a future career on it, think that calmed some of her fears. |
