Coming into US from Canada w/ > $10,000 -- problems?
So I went to my bank up here in Canada to fund myself for my upcoming WSOP trip and the branch manager, after hearing how much $ i wanted to withdraw, warned me that a lot of clients who were carrying that much in either cash or traveler's checks into the US had been not only questioned but actually detained for HOURS at customs.
I told him i was pretty sure that it wasn't a big deal as long as I declared it and told them why I was carrying so much (my plane ticket to Vegas should explain a lot). ANyone have first-hand experience with explaining to customs > $10K? Is it just a quick Q+A or will they actually give me a hard time about it...? |

I think you're a terrorist trying to bring $10K to US and A to fund Al Quaeda. I reported your post to FBI.

Re: Coming into US from Canada w/ > $10,000 -- problems?
I called US customs here in Edmonton and they told me to:
1) Go to Canada customs at the airport and tell them how much you are taking to the states and they will give you some kind of paper work. 2) When filling out your US customs form tell the truth about how much you are carrying and show them that you informed Canada Customs as well. Guy on the phone said it shouldn't be a problem. Its a problem when you don't declare it and they find it. I have never carried over $10K over the border so I don't have first hand experience. Call the US customs service at the airport you are leaving Canada from, they were pretty helpful to me here. I'm going to carry a money order for $10KUS make out to Rio Hotel and Suites, and the rest in cash. Regards, Woodguy |

Just declare it on the customs paper, put check mark over 10k on the US Customs blue form.
Tell them at the customs in LV Airport how much you brought, show them (if they ask) and tell them for what reason. |

If I carry $7500 in cash and traveller's checks and my girlfriend carries $7500 in cash and we're in the same car going over to the airport, do I need to declare it?

You should have asked the bank manager for a short letter explaining where the cash came from.
It could help smooth outquestions if they aren't in a trusting mood. |

Re: Coming into US from Canada w/ > $10,000 -- problems?
I checked yes on the "Do you have $10,000 or more in cash or cash equivalents" on the form and got held at LAX airport for 2 hours, with no explanation. Almost missed my connecting flight.
Wire the money, or don't declare it, or use your ATM card, or something - just don't give Customs a chance to [censored] you over. Seriously, being held by US Customs is most unpleasant. Avoid at all costs. |
