I've done some teaching on this and can recommend some things...
1)Start with 2 queens and the "rook roller" mate. ex: white Qa1, Qb2, Black king h3. Check down the board. Don't worry about stalemate for now. Try it with a queen and rook. Switch which is closer to the king Then try 2 rooks Then try queen & king v king. K & R v king The key idea here is that your child can learn to control the game versus making random moves. Next simple king and pawn vs. king--very simple, like showing a pawn defeating a king racing down the board at first (emphasizes promotion) then the king as blocker. Only aftger these is opposition necessary. |
