The next time I play I am going to play the Black again, but I am going to be sure to play the Red the next time after.
I have heard it is just as good, and it is a true, complete A.W. Tillinghast design, as the black was designed mostly by Tillinghast, but augmented by other architects at the time or since. - Jay |

i actualy think Red is a better golf course from a design perspective. Lots of thinking mans holes with doglegs. Also, rounds there tend to much much faster than the black.

I don't know if I'd say it's better than the black because I really love the black. They're both great (very different) designs though. |

woot just got off the black today. wow what a test. the rough is absolutely impossible to get out of unless you get a one in a million lie and it's sitting up perfectly. i played with one of my dad's students and his friend and a local that joined us and we had a great time.
the course was in awesome shape, the greens are so deceptively quick, though i luckily figured them out (thank god or i would have really killed my round). the fairways were in pristine condition, even though i wasn't in them often til the back 9. it's definitely a course that you need to play more than once to really appreciate it bc there are so many blind/partially blind shots where you dont really know where you're going or what distance you need to hit it, so i definitely hope to get back there soon. one of the guys i played with made an interesting remark about the course: he agreed that it was an amazing test of golf, yet it was kind of lacking a personality and didn't really have memorable holes or anything specific (besides the rough maybe) that made it stand out. thoughts? as for my round, i started off like a retard because i couldn't remember my swing thought to keep myself in tempo and kept snapping my drives left and just killing any chances of salvaging pars (bogeys too most of the time) on the front. front 9- 48 thank god i remember how to play after the 12th and finished the last 6 even par for a back 9 of 39 and a round of 87. the guys i played with were saying i was a completely different player on the front and the back which is encouraging to know that i still have the game and i just need to focus better and get off to a better start. |

I think if you play it again you will too. I could see it being easy to miss any sort of personality the first time around because you're overwhelmed by the course and its difficulty. Despite being a super long course with crazy rough, it actually has a pretty wide variety of holes. |
