from help.cbp.gov:

Question
Traveling with monetary instruments, currency, checks, etc., do I have to pay duty?

Answer
Customs does not collect duty on currency. However, travelers leaving or entering the U.S. are required to report monetary instruments (i.e. currency or checks) valued at $10,000 or more on a "Report of International Transportation of Currency or Monetary Instruments" form FinCEN 105. You can obtain the form in advance and download it from here FinCEN 105, or a CBP officer can give it to you upon your departure or return to the U.S. Failure to declare currency in amounts of over $10,000 can result in its seizure.Information on the FinCEN 105 is provided to the IRS, and they determine whether or not the importation of monies constitutes income subject to taxation. The requirement to import currency on a FinCEN 105 does not apply to imports of gold bullion.

Is this only coming into the U.S. or traveling within the U.S.? If I go from Baltimore to Vegas can I bring 10K?

Should I put it in my bag or carry it on? Thanks.

Checked bags have to remain unlocked, or they will cut or break the lock. Putting 10 grand in a checked bag is like scotch-taping it to the outside.

I would just keep it in my pockets.

The key thing with brining in the cash is to declare it... It's perfectly legal to bring it in, they just need to know. @ the end of the day, you have a valid reason for having that much cash, so declare & explain.

As I understand it - please correct me if I'm wrong - but bringing in $10k+ of travellers cheques also needs to be declared...

Not sure. I would guess no. You don't have to declare stuff like rare valuable coins as far as I know. Casino chips could be different though. You are boycotting the WSOP? I wish there was some alternative to play in.

Within the US, there is no limit to the amount of currency you can carry. That doesn't mean you won't get hassled if you have 200k taped to your chest. But 10k in your back pockets and a plane ticket to Vegas shouldn't be a problem.
