I love Stockton, but he's not even close to the best perimeter defender. All 5 of his All Defensive Team selections were 2nd team. Jordan and Payton each had 9 first team All-D's and a DPOY award. Pippen had 8 first teams and 2 second teams. Kobe has had 5 first team and 2 second team selections.

You seem to have a fascination with stats. Stockton is not even close to Jordan/Pippen in terms of perimeter 1-1 defense. He got many of his steals with help defense while playing in a good organized system.

i've only seen clips of michael cooper in action, but he seemed like a tremendous defender.

from dudes i've seen, it's got to be MJ.

Scottie Pippen would be my choice, only because he seemed like when you watched him that he could guard who Jordan guarded, but with length. He changed games with his defense, and people dont give him enough credit for the Bulls championships.

As far as Stockton, he was good, but theres no way hes even close to top 5 perimeter defenders, IMO. Getting steals and playing solid D are two totally different things. He had quick hands and good anticipation, but he could be beat off the dribble alot easier than a ton of players.

Wow, I voted for Pippen thinking "easy choice." Then I looked back and saw that Pippen never won Defensive POY award. OTOH, Moncrief won it twice; Jordan, Artest, the Glove, Alvin Robertson, and Michael Cooper all won it once. Still, Pippen was a pretty nasty defender in his prime and the one who stuck out the most in my mind. FWIW I would've voted Payton second. Judging from past POY awards, a better discussion would be greatest post defender of the last 25 years.
