Re: How often do you forget stuff instantly?
1) I used to do this occasionally, but I am getting better through conscious effort to remember names. I have a fantastic long term memory so if I can force myself to remember the name initially I will usually remember it forever. Usually when I forget, it is because I was not paying attention in the first place.
2) This happens rarely, but I cannot say it has never happened. 3) Same as #2 except usually when I watch TV it is on TIVO so I can fast foreward through commercials. The only other time I usually have the TV on is for background noise or a movie I am watching. Also on the rare occasion I am watching TV not on TIVO, I usually do not channel surf. 4) When I hear a song I want to get, I open up a text message in my phone and type in the name of the song (or the lyrics so I can search for the name if I do not know it) but do not send it. Instead, I save the unsent message to my out message folder, and I check that a couple times a week for reminder notes. |

Re: How often do you forget stuff instantly?
Does anyone actually get offended if someone forgets their name in a casual setting? I do this close to 100% of the time if I don't know already that I'm going to be spending a significant amount of time with them.

Re: How often do you forget stuff instantly?
El D, sorry to hijack but I just got this in an email...Can anyone relate to this?...
[ QUOTE ] Recently, I was diagnosed with A. A. A. D. D. - Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder. This is how it manifests: I decide to water my garden. As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide it needs washing. As I start toward the garage, I notice mail on the porch table that I brought up from the mailbox earlier. I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car. I lay my car keys on the table, put the junk mail in the garbage can under the table, and notice that the can is full. So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the garbage first. But then I think, since I'm going to be near the mailbox when I take out the garbage anyway, I may as well pay the bills first. I take my checkbook off the table, and see that there is only 1 check left. My extra checks are in my desk in the study, so I go inside the house to my desk where I find the can of Coke I'd been drinking. I'm going to look for my checks, but first I need to push the Coke aside so that I don't accidentally knock it over. The Coke is getting warm, and I decide to put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold. As I head toward the kitchen with the Coke, a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye -- they need water. I put the Coke on the counter and discover my reading glasses that I've been searching for all morning. I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water the flowers. I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table. I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, I'll be looking for the remote, but I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs, but first I'll water the flowers. I pour some water in the flowers, but a bit of it spills on the floor. So, I set the remote back on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill. Then, I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do. At the end of the day: - the car isn't washed - the bills aren't paid - there is a warm can of Coke sitting on the counter - the flowers don't have enough water, - there is still only 1 check in my checkbook, - I can't find the remote, - I can't find my glasses, - and I don't remember what I did with the car keys. Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all day, and I'm really tired. I realize this is a serious problem, and I'll try to get some help for it, but first I'll check my e-mail. [/ QUOTE ] |

Re: How often do you forget stuff instantly?
My brother had a bout of short term memory loss for a couple of years that frustrated him immensely to the point of depression. Then he found some nutritional supplement at a health food store that restored his memory so well that he returned to remembering the dreams he'd just woken up to...
If anyone wants to know, I guess I could ask him what it was that he took. As for #1, the reason I think we fail to remember is that faces and people are complex enough to warrant a series of steps to associate the visual with the literal, and socially we typically aren't given enough time to process this. I guess it would be humorous and effective to use a physical routine rather than a name during introductions, the other aspect is that many people share the same first name. As for #2, I usually just repeat an mnemonic of items I need to bring along, which seems to work aloud. I don't experience 3 or 4 partly because I have rabbit ears and I never bother with identifying music. I would be unsurprised if many of you have excellent abilities to memorize numbers and phone numbers in contrast to your other shortcomings. Also, it would help to know exactly how much pot has adversely affected whom. |
