A friend picked up an Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 for 59 bucks at a compUSA that
was closing. He decided against trying to build a box and sold it to me. I want to know what the consensus is on the most stable board and chipset is for that processor and what direction I should go with ram with THAT board and processor combination. Also looking for a recommendation on a graphics card. I am not a gamer, don't need or anticipate ever needing or using SLI. Overclocking is not something I am interested in at this point, though THAT could change. What kind of power supply do I need? I do some graphics work with Photoshop and other smaller programs, and work with FP, Dreamweaver more often along with some movie editing and audio editing. I want to build a stable and fast system, yet not go overboard piecewise. Thanks |

I like the DG965WH intel motherboard. 400W power supply should be fine.

Case + PSU: I would get at least 400 watt PSU. But you can google "PSU calculator" and find out what you need. www.newegg.com has some really cool cases you may wanna check out.
Mobo: Asus is the best, but since you arent need SLI or stuff, then any generic ECS mobo would work. You can check out reviews for mobo's at www.motherboards.org. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128012 Graphics card: Get a ATI 9600 Pro. Its $60 and ive been using it for the past 3 years. Ive never had any problems and it even runs some decent games. But if you want something with like a tv tuner do some research on newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102410 RAM: Find the best deal you can. 1 GB - 2 GB would do you just fine. Dont spend over $125 on 2 gb of RAM. And PC 4200+ should do you fine. These look good: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145526 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145527 |

Intel boards are the best there is.
That 9600 is old school. Modern boards dont even have AGP slots dude. PCIe 16x is the new standard. Get DD2 667 or 800. |

FYP. Why can't they build chipsets like the 440BX anymore? [/ QUOTE ] My own opinion is that they spend most of their time adding extra features, ie 8 USB hubs, firewire, 6 SATA ports, 1 EIDE, dual 1G ethernet, spdif, audio codec etc. This necessarily leaves less time to tweak the core logic. |
