Not Your Typical Request for Advice on Las Vegas.
I'll be in Vegas June 17-27, and plan on playing a couple of the Binion's Poker Classic events, one or two local tournaments, and perhaps a WSOP event. However, most of my poker play will be in either stud or LHE cash games. Whatever other free time I have during the day will likely be spent playing golf. I've been to Vegas before and have a pretty good idea of where I will be playing poker and golf. However, this will be my first trip to Vegas on my own, and this is why I need some advice.
All my previous trips to Vegas were with my wife and all of my activities, aside from playing poker, were things we did together. I am now a widower and I'm completely clueless as to what to do for entertainment by myself in Vegas when I'm not going to be playing poker or golf. I'm in my mid-50s, healthy and still like to have fun in crowds and meet new people. Are there any nightclubs, bars and/or shows a single guy my age would enjoy? Any other suggestions on things for me to do (or avoid doing)?

Studio 54 at the mgm is fun. Can't go wrong with the strip clubs either. The crazy horse is a blast! So many things to do.. New york New york has a dueling pianos gig at their irish pub. Really is a blast!

Since I started playing poker a few years ago, my wife has let me take an annual trip to Las Vegas alone to play poker. The first time that I went, I did nothing but sit at the poker tables for hours. I stayed at the Mirage that trip, and I never even got to see the volcano! I remember leaving for the airport directly from the poker room, sitting down on the plane, opening a book, and noticing that my fingertips had turned green from the felt.
After that first trip, I decided that I needed to get out and do a few other things while in town, even if I was by myself. Since then, I make it a point to have at least one decent meal at a "nicer" restaurant than a hotel coffee shop or buffet. Vegas hotels boast a number of mid-priced restaurants that are sort of in the middle of the casino floors. You can do plenty of entertaining people-watching there while also having some good food, too. I have also found that most people in Vegas are lot friendlier than a typical bar in a big city somewhere. They come to Vegas to have fun, and for whatever reason, they drop their inhibitions. As a result, you can walk into any of the great bars/lounges in Vegas, grab a drink, and strike up a conversation with any of the other tourists there. Everyone is interested in learning where you are from and what you do in the rest of your life, and it is a relaxing way to pass some time away from the poker tables. Plus, many of these places also have live entertainment at night, and if you're not inclined to talk with any of your fellow vactioners, you can at least enjoy some free music. Finally, the pool at your hotel is probably also another great place to just hang out. A few good drinks, some brilliant sunshine, and a good poolside lounge can be a nice and relaxing way to pass an afternoon before all the fish come out at night to play poker!

There are some pretty good pool parties at night at some of the hotels - the locals on the board can give you more info.
