I knew the CPT was a joke the first time I watched one of their shows and within the first 2 minutes, Jim VanHorne called it (not jokingly) "unlimited texas holdem". That was pretty classic. The rest of the hour had me in stitches too. Complaining about the CPT is like complaining about a Britney Spears album, sure it sucks, but how didn't you know that already?

[/ QUOTE ] Well, Van Horne is out and i'm in. I agree that it needs some work, but I think the CPT is moving in the right direction. Look for some exciting formats to be televised in the next 12 months. To the OP. The point about Hwang is valid, but the rest is you being a nit. The fact that a women won an open tournament is good because it will likely encourage new women players to enter making the fields soft for players like you to cash in on. Not to mention a few guys that think that if a women won they surely can. Also, he didn't say he preferred a female champion, just that it was a good thing. Stop putting words into peoples' mouths. Tuco: So you're saying the part where they originally played to count segregated tournaments towards tour standings does not also qualify as a valid point?
It makes me a nit to point out that they are so desperate to reach the female demographic that they are willing to give them a competitive advantage when competing in an open field, in an equal game? I'm glad you agree on the Hwang thing and its validity. From that, I conclude that they wanted to use the heavily televised women's-only tournaments in an effort to "manufacture" a female player they could put on their panel of experts. Would you say that is a valid conclusion? And what he said was that it is always good when a female wins; it is obviously not always good when a male wins (otherwise he would be saying 'it is always good when someone wins', which would be a completely nonsensical waste of time) so it's pretty a pretty clear conclusion as far as I'm concerned. Tour co-ordinators have no business making statements showing any sort of preferences like that, as it looks exceedingly unprofessional. And it's only a bias we accept because we are allowed as a society to be biased in favor of that demographic. Try saying "It's always good when a man / Caucasian wins." at the end of your first tournament you cover and see if you make it to the second. Of course, how that article describes how they handled the spat at the final three tables (and my personal experience with how they handle disputes) also reeks of unprofessionality, but that's another point altogether. By the way, congrats and good luck being the commentator next year. The CPT really is moving in the right direction. I know full well how hard they all work to keep poker in the limelight in Canada, even if they made some bad choices and some tough choices early on. |

[/ QUOTE ] Get some new friends? [/ QUOTE ] Fair enough, I suppose I should have clarified that my own personal friends would be included. Here I mean "people" in the generic sense, as in "of the subset of people in the poker world who know neither of us, from sponsors to players to viewers at home, not one would be cheering for me". Which is as far as I'm concerned very close to the fact. |

It makes me a nit to point out that they are so desperate to reach the female demographic that they are willing to give them a competitive advantage when competing in an open field, in an equal game? [/ QUOTE ] No. I have no idea about that. You said it was corrected so you can infer that they realized they made a mistake and took action. Look, the CPT is in a very tough market to make money. Poker on television in Canada is a break-even proposition at best. The CPT wants to bring people to game no matter what sex or color they are. They need to have more participation to survive. That simple. They are not biased toward anyone, they need more butts in the seats from whatever demographic they can find. They made a mistake and corrected it. If you care enough to see the CPT survive (and it sounds like you do) then you will cut them some slack while they try to find enough people to play so the tour can survive. They are not trying to screw over pudgy middle aged men like you and I, they are trying to appeal to all segments of the poker playing population as well as to bring in new players. Very difficult task. [ QUOTE ] I'm glad you agree on the Hwang thing and its validity. From that, I conclude that they wanted to use the heavily televised women's-only tournaments in an effort to "manufacture" a female player they could put on their panel of experts. Would you say that is a valid conclusion? [/ QUOTE ] Not even close. The only thing you should conclude from this is that they made a mistake, if what you say is true because to be honest I have no idea if MH did make two final tables. You sound like you know this for fact so I will trust that it is. In any event, sometimes mistakes made are not part of a conspiracy. Lisa is a very good player and has been playing poker in Vancouver for a long time. They use her on the magazine panel to cater to a different demographic that reads the magazine. She likely would have been on the panel if she had only one cash. [ QUOTE ] And what he said was that it is always good when a female wins; it is obviously not always good when a male wins (otherwise he would be saying 'it is always good when someone wins', which would be a completely nonsensical waste of time) so it's pretty a pretty clear conclusion as far as I'm concerned. [/ QUOTE ] If a local would have won it he would have said "it's always good when a local guy wins our event" or if a senior would have won it etc. This is you being a nit again. [ QUOTE ] Of course, how that article describes how they handled the spat at the final three tables (and my personal experience with how they handle disputes) also reeks of unprofessionality, but that's another point altogether. [/ QUOTE ] I have no idea what this is about, but it sounds like it has to do with the tournament staff and not the CPT. Two different entities. [ QUOTE ] By the way, congrats and good luck being the commentator next year. The CPT really is moving in the right direction. I know full well how hard they all work to keep poker in the limelight in Canada, even if they made some bad choices and some tough choices early on. [/ QUOTE ] Thanks. I've done four or five tournaments now so it's getting more comfortable. BTW, I don't speak for the CPT. This is just my semi-informed response to your post. Tuco. |
