Re: What summer fruits are you looking forward to?
[ QUOTE ]
I didn't know there were just summer fruits anymore. My market has 'everything' all year round these days. [/ QUOTE ] it's still easy to notice the difference. For instance, I can get strawberries year round, but there's a guy who owns a patch near my folks' house. One of the real treats of the summer. The stuff you buy at the store doesn't really hold a candle to them. Same goes for just about any good local peek season fruit. Say what you will about people getting all gay about organic this and local that, but when you're near some fresh local fruit, it really is a treat. |

Re: What summer fruits are you looking forward to?
OP,
I speak as a former produce clerk/dept manager for a high-end chain here in town, though it's been ten years: White peaches >>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;> peaches, I never had a peach that was close to as good as a white peach when equally ripe. Same thing with white nectarines. I don't care for regular nectarines but GOOD GOD are white nectarines good when properly ripe. Also, White Ranier Cherries (sometimes called White Cherries or Ranier Cherries) are incredibly good. When I was running a department I would sit in the back and eat half of the box before I put it on the shelf. Soooooooo good. Also, this stuff is definitely seasonal, regardless of what other posters say. No way you can get quality Driscoll's strawberries or in season watermelon, cantaloupe, or honeydew nearly as good out of season as you can this time of year. |

Re: What summer fruits are you looking forward to?
Fruit is my business, so for those of you that say there isnt a differnce, you're wrong. Heres what i know about the stuff I use.
Canteloupe: Peak season is june till about early november. Thats when they comes from Texas and California. If you can find a texas melon...usually only around in june, get one....by far the best. During the winter months they come from costa rica, honduras, guatemala. They pick them a little underripe so that it can make the trip here and still have a shelf life. Much firmer, not as sweet. Honeydew is very similar to canteloupe. Local US stuff is the best, esp in summer...although mexican honeydew is pretty good during the colder months. Strawberries. Nothing beats a california strawberry. Contrary to popular opinion, Driscoll is not always the best. Be on the lookout for Dole/Coastal. Gorgeous color and sweetness. Not always available. Winter months you get florida and mexican berries. Pretty good, but more tart and generally smaller. Oranges are a winter fruit. Summer citrus is usually meh. Pineapple: great year round. If you can get hawaii thats best, but costa rican is pretty good as well. |

Re: What summer fruits are you looking forward to?
Why I like peaches:
1. A ripe peach is the best tasting fruit on the planet. 2. A ripe peach is the rarest fruit on the planet. |
