Hand 2 was a checkraise for value.

By that you imply that a worse hand will call. What worse hand is calling here?

In hand number one i think you are way off. He's not folding any hand you thought you could push him off of.

In the second hand, I like the play. i think you are ahead here often enough, and if your behind another pair you still have outs.

Stop 3betting UTG tags with good but not great hands. If you feel firsky pick a SC, at least you can often second barrel with those.

So far 3betting with pocket pairs has been working great for me. I have reasonable FE preflop and a lot more FE postflop then if I just called preflop. And ofcourse I hit a set everyone once in a while and when that happens the pot is already bigger, which makes it easier to get a stack in. I don't see why suited connectors are better for 3betting then pocket pairs.

You are trying and thinking way too hard. 3-betting 77 is a hugely -ev play at this limit. Keep it simple and cold call preflop.

Ok, I'll try to explain.

3bet light is essentially a bluff. A bluff works well against someone who doesnt have a hand. A TAG raising UTG is probably not the case. If he is a nit its fine, if he is a tag - its not. If he raises in CO and you reraise OTB - its fine. If he raises UTG and you raise OTB - its not.

Now FE wise you hand means null. 72o has just as much FE as AA. When we take the pot down by cbetting - same story.

When we get raised after a 3bet or a cbet we are pretty much done with the hand anyway and SC or PP doesnt matter unless we hit an absolute monster.

Now lets worry about what happens if we get called.

First of all, a 3bet pot is differnt from other pots because essentially it is a big pair pot. Whoever has a bigger pair usually wins. Two pairs in this case is a monster. Bets are much smaller and draw friendly.

So. If say there are two scenarios:

a) we have 77
b) we have 98s

Differences?

What if we cbet and our cbet gets called and we:

1) missed the flop completely:

a) 77 - easy c/f.
b) 98s - easy c/f.

2) hit the flop marginally (ie one apir or a draw)

a) 77 - practically does not exist cept for a 4 card straight or flush. Not always gonna get paid even in 3bet pots.

b) 98s - bingo. We can draw cheap if we choose to (often drawing to more than 10 outs). We can second barrel if we choose to. We can hit and get paid easy. Getting paid with a 3 crad straight or a flush may be a hard job in raised pots. In 3bet pots its easy.

3) We hit a monster.

a) 77 - superb. We get paid easily. But we usually would get paid just as easily in raised pots if our opponent has a hand. 3betting is really not necessary to get paid with a pp when we have a set and our opponent is on TPTK or KK.

b) 98s - superb. Get paid just as easy, because opponent will protect his hand like crazy on a drawy board.

So basically to sum this up.

First, if you want to 3bet light, dont pick TAGs raising UTG.

Second, dont pick PP for this unless your both deep because viallins potential to stack off with a strong hand against your set is about the same be it a raised or a reraised pot.

Third, your potential to hit with 98s is better than with 77. Your options postflop with 98s are better than with 77. Playing draws is easier in reraised pots than in raised pots. Getting paid on a 3flush or straight board is easier in reraised than raised pots.

And just remember that 98s > 77 against TP type of hand.
