[ QUOTE ] Sam and Dave - did "Soul Man" and a couple toons off the Blues Brothers soundtrack. rb [/ QUOTE ] Heh, I actually put Sam and Dave on my list then erased them when I realized Soul Man was the only song I could remember by them. SpaceAce [/ QUOTE ] I liked "soothe me" so much I went looking for the album and found a couple others I recognized - "Soothe Me" was the track playing on the radio when Jake and Elwood were discussing where the band members had gone to rb |

Re: Anyone like soul music?
Has anyone seen the movie Dead Presidents? This is the style I enjoy. Not sure if this would be funk or traditional soul. How about this for starters?

Re: Anyone like soul music?
It's not an exact fit, but Bill Withers' "Use me" is a great song and you should look him up.

Re: Anyone like soul music?
I checked out some stuff on Itunes. Definately the James Brown/Otis Redding type stuff. Real cool. Definately not teh Delfonics/Isaac Hayes stuff. I like the more upbeat "garage-ish" stuff.
Thanks. |

Fela Kuti and Africa 70. once you discover how awesome Fela is, you can then enjoy reading about his life and what a badass he was. Fela made a compound, declared it independant from Nigeria, married all of his backup singers, and released albums critical of the nigerian government until they invaded his compound, burned it to the ground, threw his mother out a window, and almost killed him. Fela proceeded to deliver his mother's coffin to the barracks of the soldiers that invaded his compound, and made songs about all of this. It is helped by how awesome his music is, sort of a Jazzy afrobeat (a genre he named, and invented) that is very reminiscent of James Brown. In 1971 James Brown brought the JBs to see Fela in Nigeria. He said "Most of the stuff my boys learned from Fela, Fela learned from me in the first place" Fela never played a song live after he recorded it. his songs often range from 10-30 minutes of awesomeness. I recommend "Zombie", "Gentleman", and "Sorrow, Blood, and Tears". Thanks. [/ QUOTE ] |

Re: Anyone like soul music?
I like really funky soul, straight funk. Curtis Mayfield is awesome (superfly is the best OST ever).
James Brown has a band with Maceo Parker called The JB's that are really funky. Absolutely incredible stuff. More acts to check out..... Cymande Roy Ayers Average White Band. Man there's too much stuff to list. |

Re: Anyone like soul music?
Try Tyrone Davis. So good.
I worked a food service job with a 50 year old, overweight, gay, black fellow, he kept this CD on the whole shift, stripping to it when needed...but even without that image, the album is awesome. I saw him live when he was about 65, the crowd was 80% women, and young and old, they were all gushing to him. The men who accompanied them were all like "well, I can never be Tyrone, but at least he got my woman 95% to orgasm for me" |
