Default Re: Live Games = Variance Time?

One thing about transitioning from 'net to live play that took me a while to realize. Online, everyone's pretty much there to make money, maybe a little entertainment value, but pretty much, they are there to make money.

In live play, there are lots of reasons people play. People will be gambooling it up, trying to make back losses from blackjack/yesterday's session, just to drink and socialize, etc. People get something out of the game if they keep coming back, but it's not always a win. That kinda makes it a different game.

I think the McKenna book, Beyond Tells, has helped my live game a lot (although its not very well organized, there is some good info. in there.

Each session i suppose i expect to make 10bbs an hour as i make that online and the casino play is worse.

You cannot expect to make 10BB per hour when you are being dealt about 40 hands in that hour.

Sounds like it was just a bad night for you. You definitely don't want to be the donkey that calls with k10o utg and get it wacked by AK. Poker takes a lot of patience. Be sure and use that tight image to steal pots when appropriate.

I play a £200 live game in a uk card club... (WESTERN).

Its usually 9 handed and very loose.

The problem is i find myself waiting an eternity (2-3hrs+) for hands believing the best way of cracking the table is to dominate someones k10 etc.

The problem is i look like an absolute rock, or scrooge, as im sitting there waiting not wanting to play a big pot with K9 etc.

My question is should i try and outplay (which i could) these loose maniacish sort of players and jump in the variance pool or stick to my solid (variance reducing game) game?

How do you play your local live games?

if they allow straddle throw that on every 45 minutes it costs almost nothing and people will question whether you really are a scrooge. also make big semi bluffs w/ strong draws against selected players. one of these a session will permanently rid you of scrooge status.

Great ideas everyone, keep them coming. Im a consistant winner at online microstakes, but these loose-passive live 1/2 games are killing me! On top of that, im known as the tightest player! Thanks.
