P.S.A. - C.S.A.
C.S.A. stands for Community Supported Agriculture. What it means is that a local farmer sells "shares" of the produce for the season. Farmers share the risks of weather and other factors (insects, weeds, etc.) with the shareholders. The shareholders get the benefits of the freshest, locally grown produce available.
Mrs. Skoob heard about a CSA farm and we decided to buy a half-share for this summer. We're paying a mere $360 (the entire season, not $360 per week) for weekly batches of vegs and herbs for roughly 18 weeks. You get anywhere from 7 to 25 lbs. of produce per week for a full share. This particular farm is also organic and they offer separate shares for fresh strawberries, flowers, and eggs. If you're interested, check out this site for general CSA information in the US: http://www.nal.usda.gov/afsic/pubs/csa/csa.shtml To locate a CSA farm in the US: http://www.wilson.edu/csasearch/search.asp Also, here's the link for the farm we have a half share in: http://www.easybeanfarm.com/ BTW - We don't typically buy organic produce or "whole" foods. We're just your typical supermarket shoppers who thought this sounded like a good way to support a local farm and get some good vegs while doing it. We're all for supporting small, local businesses. |
