Default Friend owing money gets mugged

This doesn't involve me, however it happened to two of my friends (who are also pretty close friends). I'll call them Mike and Dave. Mike owed Dave $10k. This is a LOT of money to both people, but they trust each other completely.

Mike had the $10k ready and planned to meet Dave at a local private club to give it to him. Dave got their early and was playing in the game. About a minute after Mike arrived, the place was held up and Mike (who had the envelope of money in his hand now and was standing right next to the door) was mugged at gunpoint. After that the robbers got scared off, but got away with the $10k.

So, what now? Does Mike still owe Dave the $10k? The money was in the same building as both of them, Mike just hadn't handed it to Dave yet. Do they split the losses? Does it make a difference if Mike had physically handed the envelope to Dave already? Where is the line?

Mike still own 10K to Dave because it's a standard scam. He paid a % of the 10K to the robber.

I can see how some would think this, but it's simply not the case (or if you don't believe that, ASSUME it's not the case for purposes of this thread).

Still owes all money as it was never delivered. Had Dave taken delivery, then it would be a debt payed.

The debt should certainly still stand.
