My friend just asked me to give him odds on a bet.
He is: 5'10" skinny; roughly 155 lbs. decently athletic His bet is that he can dunk a basketball within 5 months. What odds should I give him? When asked what kind of odds he was looking for, he simply said,"good odds" |

Give him 20-1, but know that it is much, much, much worse than that.

If he can dunk in 5 months, pay him 200 bucks.
If he can't, he has to shave his head and grow a mustache for 3 months. |

Whatever odds you offer you will lose the bet as long as he really wants to win.

I'd offer him 6-1. I think his chances are about 9-1.

Guess it depends on how close he can get now.
I've seen guys his height dunk no problem. ScottieK |

It's tough because rarely do people make that bet unless they've done it before.
If you trust him, I'd say 5-1 should be fine. It's tough to get the hops to dunk. Make sure you hash out details, like it goes in the basket clean, etc. |

You better be smart enough to word it so that he doesn't Amarillo Slim ya azz. Like outlawing a dunk starting with standing on a crate for example.

Meh. Have you watched him try to dunk? You might be getting set up.
I think 5 months is too short to have a good chance unless he is already fairly close (at least able to get fingers around the rim). He may underestimate how far above the rim you need to be to dunk. I'd lay him about 10-1. NT |
