Even if submarines are too expensive (how much more than a crab fishing boat?) they could benefit from some sort of underwater reconaissance to track teh crabs. I can't imagine an unmanned camera-bot would be too expensive. Time to start thinking 3-dimensionally.

Again sir, trained monkeys are the answer. In this case though, instead of wicker baskets, give them video cameras. As with most problems in life, trained monkeys are the answer. Something for you to keep in mind.

we didn't hire a bunch of trained monkeys just to have them sit around and do nothing. they see, and catch. 2 for 1.

As a former Subamrine Officer, I 'd be happy to do the driving should you happen to complete your design, construction and purchase of a submarine.

Why the obsession with seeing the crabs? Just get some GPS beacon thingies and stick them to the crabs that get thrown back.

Is there something wrong with farm-raised crabs? Or will they not reproduce in captivity for some reason.

I think OP is missing the point. The idea isn't to catch crabs more efficiently, that would result in over harvesting and soon no crabs. I propose instead that that they require crabbers to off load the crabs every time they catch a VW Bugs worth. What this means is, of course, Jet Crab Boats!

Duke,

I just assumed that, since these guys have to motor all over the Bearing Sea to find the crabs, that they have a pretty big migratory range and thus wouldn't take well to captivity. And they seem to die fairly quickly in the holding tanks, although how much of that is being restricted and how much is having a billion other crabs on top of them I have no idea.
