Re: Used Cars vs New... \'04 Civic, \'07 Mazda3...
I bought a year old certified civic with around 30k miles on it. I've had no problems at all over the last four years or so, I haven't really driven it this year though.

not too much to add, but i've been looking into both these cars for a rather immediate purchase too. probably both are going to be used though. looking at very similar prices, around 12k-14k. why aren't you looking at a used Mazda3? (i just started my research so maybe this is a dumb question.)

Re: Used Cars vs New... \'04 Civic, \'07 Mazda3...
My only advice is to get a car that you'll want to drive for a long time, because it's a lot cheaper to drive one to the ground than it is to be constantly trading one in.
I'd suggest getting a non-economy car, something with some power (180hp+), and a comfortable interior. While civics and similar are good cars that will hold up, they essentially drive like go-karts and will always be seen as a kid's car. Good cars are things like Maximas, Accords, Camrys, etc. |

Added - FWIW, Mazda 3's are very good cars as well.

Just buy a cheaper older used car and stop wasting money.

I have an '01 civic with 70k miles that just had to get a new alternator and transmission (its an automatic, bad mojo). I treated it real nice too.
It gets good gas mileage though and otherwise is a pretty decent car. |

I have an 02 Civic & have never had any problems. Easy to drive, cheap to service etc.
I had a 96 Mazda Astina Hardtop before the Civic. That was very nice too, so I can't knock Mazda either. IMO though - the Civic is a nice, simple car, go for that. |

And there are plenty of peppy four cylinder cars, too. |
