it's just THAT damn difficult to succeed at one specific task, much less two.

I don't doubt it. But hardly any even try. As a starting pitcher you have pretty many days were you don't do anything at all. There's no reason they couldn't turn around and throw some. I don't doubt most wouldn't succeed, but thats not a reason not to try.

There's the issue of tweaking the mechanics on one arm changing and [censored] up the mechanics on the other arm. The kid who is ambidextrous and pitches for Creighton has godawful mechanics on the left side and reasonable ones on the right. No pitching coach would allow that kid to throw from the left, ever.

Hitting is much easier to do switch-handed, since the primary skill is rotating on an axis and getting the hands in the right slot position. Pitching is about 300 different things mechanically.

Have a question for the stats guys.

Whats the value of an average pitcher who can hit well. By well I mean say .270.

Is this value higher then a backup centerfielder?

Like is Kenny Lofton better value then Jamie Moyer(who can hit)??

Note I know Moyer is having a decent year and so is Wake, and not sure if everyone here is old enough to compare to a pitcing Niekro.. But I cant think of an old knuckle or junk ball pitcher right now..

danvh,

A pitcher's hitting is worth very little. The difference between a .100 hitter with no power and a .250 hitter with no power is very small when you consider that they get 2-3 AB every five games.

Ichiro has to go to the Yankees next year. I mean it's all there, slightly past prime, will be overpaid, super famous player that would bring in a lot of money to the team. Total lock.
