I think it's pretty clear from his work that De Niro retired from acting years ago. I don't think he has the fire/passion left that he did when he completely immersed himself in roles months and sometimes years before filming.

The funny thing is that his film choices seemed to indicate that he was fully aware of this, which is why this surprises me.
