I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Jim leaving her in New York without saying anything and then driving back to Scranton to ask out Pam means they are broken up.

I seriously doubt he ditched her without saying anything. I'm sure he broke up with her and she decided to stay with with friends in NY or something rather than drive back with him.
