Default Re: HS/College or new grads: How big is poker among young people?

Most of my friends like to play micro home games and such. Some are willing to play smallest stakes at a casino. Only a few have ever put money online and its been like 100 bucks and none of them didn't go busto and stop.

Of course, everyone thinks they're good at poker. After they win a few $20 home sngs they think they're masters (and of course won't accept advice since they're so good). But, they still won't really try online poker. I do think playing poker seems to be considered a pretty "cool" though.

I only know one person at Michigan who made as much as me (polly even more). He's actually a poster here--Terrabon98.

None of my close friends play poker or have any idea how to play. A couple tried to play 5+1 SNGs, and I think one of them made like 100 bucks lifetime.

I've heard of a few small buy-in games that go on, but overall at Michigan, I'd say that poker isn't big. Occasionally when I'm walking to class I overhear something like "Ugggg listen to this hand man, I had AK and pushed preflop and lost to AJ!"

I think a lot of people don't have enough money to risk when they're starting out, and none have the patience/skill to turn 50 dollars into a large sum.

That's always been my edge--I turned 50 dollars into a lot of money and never really cared if I lost it b/c meh "I'm really only losing 50 dollars." Terrible logic, but it helped me get started.

Lots and lots of people still play and are constantly up for games. I would imagine that as 2+2 junkies, there are two opposite forces working wrt how much we hear about poker in college. On the one hand, many of us are known as the guy with two huge monitors in his room and poker books strewn about, so that's always a conversation starter. On the other, we're so immersed in poker online that talking to "outsiders" about it is one of the most dreadful experiences there is, and we seek to avoid that. Maybe this doesn't apply to anyone, dunno.

EDIT: Some people already got to a few of these points.

Most young players seem to be solidly encroached in the no-limit games

This is def true.
does anyone disagree that the decline started much before the legislation?

[/ QUOTE ]

Agree 100%. Moneymaker started it, the decline started even before last year's WSOP I'd say.

I go to UCLA too.

there seems to be a lot of low stakes sng games($20 buyins) at the dorms and stuff, and some degens that go to live casinos, but I don't know that many people making it big.

I only know of 2 other people other than me who make >100k a year(and they quit i think)

in my opinion, the number of serious young players has decresaed significantly. the games are tougher, and new entry is much tougher. there is still a lot of poker, friendly dorm/home games, etc., though

adsman,

what are the laws on taxes on gambling in italy?

[/ QUOTE ]

In the EU, you pay taxes on gambling only if you make the money from the country where you are residing. So, to pax taxes on this in Italy you would have to play at Italian registered sites or casinos. This is why Italy tried to put a block in a few years ago. It had no effect though.

[/ QUOTE ]

so an italian citizen who lives in thailand would not have to pay any tax if gambling is his sole income?

[/ QUOTE ]

No, that's completely different. In that situation you have to follow the laws in Thailand, EU laws have no bearing there. I'm talking about if you're living and gambling in Italy.

[/ QUOTE ]

Well Americans are taxed when they live abroad by the American government. I am going through the process to get Italian citizenship from my grand parents and I am trying to find out the gambling tax laws, but no one seems to have a definitive answer. My only source of income is professional gambling, and I live in Asia. I realize that I am subject to Thailand's tax regulatations because I am living here.

Yes, I've been invited to quite a few casual low buyin home games recently. On the plus side, I now have three groups of mid-to-late twenties women who want me to throw a "teach them how to play poker" party.

[/ QUOTE ]
Obviously for the bo_obies.

Do you earn more than 80k a year? If not, don't worry.
