Re: Fighting
The largest psychological aspect to it is showing up. Real martial arts are HARD. Even if taught in a friendly environment. That said, there is NO reason they can't be taught in a friendly environment. And if they are, you are far more likely to come back week after week after month after year until you're really good, and enjoying yourself all along the way.
Forget the talk of being a superhero; a superhero is a guy who never stops training. You sure you want to never stop training, anyway? Few people are like that. Fighting well is not like cramming for an exam. What you want to look for is the people and places that make you realize this is for you. Get weirdness, snobbery, or bad attitudes from people, and even if it's a great place for your friend, it may not be for you at all. Not even close. P.S.: Don't believe all the hype people throw around. Martial arts is as full of hype as you could ever possibly imagine. it's ferociously competitive and full of ass-wipe behavior in that regard. As someone with a third rank in jiu-jitsu, I'll put myself forward first in saying that jiu-jitsu is NOT everything you need to know. Feel free to look around and find something you love and will stick with, and expand outward from there. Just by doing what you love, and sticking to it, you will be miles ahead of all the theorists and wanna be tough guys. |
