Actually, the E meter works very similarly to a lie detector, it measures electrical resistance on a minute level and guides the questioning used in Auditing - the use and operation is like a form of psychyistry and its quite clever actually.

Dont judge scientology simply on what youve seen on South Park - whilst most of it is weird in the same way as Creationism (believed by more than 80% of Americans) or Angels is weird, a lot of the stuff like the Auditing works.

Fwiw, i dont consider Scientology any better, worse or weirder than any other organised religion.
