Okay, I reread the OP (sorry, work is nuts). Against this opponent, Joker, I agree that bet/call is a fine line (best player at the table who exhibits TAG tendencies, but seems to know what he's doing and is observent enough to be creative when the situation calls for it). I'm not sure I'd always take it, but often would here.

Versus most villains, though, I think that few play such a weird mix of style that it would be the best move (an exception would be a super LAGGY guy who would call with plans of raising any river as a move).

I am "Ben B." on the board.. just a tallish white guy was wearing a black fancy shirt and shorts yesterday.

Results: Villain had A[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], 3[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] boooo!

if this guy is going to see the river with AK on dry boards what's the point in 3betting something like A6 pf?

what about all the hands that dominate us and the fact that we're out of position? i just don't think it's a good idea against a tag who's not going to give up easily...

River bet good or is check/call better?

I have 3 things to say:

1. You can find the answer to your basic question in The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky.
2. You shouldn't be playing 40/80 without knowing that answer, unless, you are rich.
3. Since you don't know the answer to the question, I am willing to bet that you were far from the best player at the table.
