Re: Moving to Caribbean ASAP (Need Advice)
[ QUOTE ]
Also I thought Puerto Rico and Carribbean were continental US and therefore I would not need to abide by 90 day stay. My knowledge of all this is very slim so forgive me. [/ QUOTE ] Puerto Rico is a US possession as is the US Virgin Islands. The rest of the Caribbean is filled with a bunch of different nations. You didn't really think they were part of the USA did you? |

[/ QUOTE ] PR and the US virgin islands are different than the rest of the Caribbean. I'm not sure how that would affect you but I would assume all of the visa reqs would be different (if there even are any for PR and USVI, idk). |

You don't even need a passport for PR or the Virgin Islands.

Re: Moving to Caribbean ASAP (Need Advice)

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Its not like I want to make six digits down there. I just want to get away for a few years. Be a beach bum. Couldn't I drive a cab or something similar? [/ QUOTE ] Most of these countries are economically depressed and DO NOT let foreigners take 'normal' jobs like cab drivers, bartenders, etc. The only jobs they will let you take are either highly skilled jobs that locals can't fill (not many/hard to get) or volunteer jobs like teaching in a day school. [/ QUOTE ] Thanks, what exactly are you doing down there? [/ QUOTE ] Playing poker and being a beach bum. I get to stay for 2.5 yrs on a tourist visa only because my gf is in vet school. If that wasn't the case I don't think you can get a tourist visa extended for very long very or at all. I'm sure it's possible - like if you were volunteering for a local school or something and they could get you a work visa, or if you got one of the rare real jobs that exist. But pretty much get it out of your head that you are going to be a scuba instructor or bartender...those jobs SHOULD go to locals anyway. And yes, I know people in my situation who have tried to work under the table and have been deported. Anyway, you need to do ALOT of research before considering a move like this. And OOT probably isn't the best place to start |

Re: Moving to Caribbean ASAP (Need Advice)
I live part of the year in Puerto Rico.I have a prediliction for latin chicks. Not to mention Asian and Scandinavian. If you are a US citizen,it is the easiest place to live in the islands for some obv reasons. No passport,US currency and federal laws.PR is a US territory so everyone is a US citizen.A large percentage of the people are bilingual.Spanish helps, but certainly isn't necessary.Great beaches, nightlife, golf, fishing, culture and history.Plenty of casinos with poker on the island. My boy CASHCONDO just made the final table in the Sunday Mill,so there is a thriving poker community here.If you don't speak Spanish getting a job can be a chore, but the hotel and tourist industry are always hiring.I started my career working at a hotel in San Juan 13 years ago.I'll post an "ask me thread" if I can figure out which forum to post in.Oh ,by the way,it's really not that hot there.I am in San Antonio, where it hits 100degrees regularly in the summer and fall. That's unheard of in PR.80's year round in the day with a tradewind.High 60's to low 70's at night. The mountains can actually get down into the 50's in the winter but along the coast is the same all year.I worry more about hurricanes in Florida and the Outer Banks more than I do PR,frankly. They only have to watch the ones from the Cape Verde islands.Really End of August to mid- October typically.OH yeah, did I mention latin chicks?
PS.Somebody bump that Thailand thread plz. |
