Re: Describe some of the most exciting at-bats you\'ve witnessed.
[ QUOTE ]
2 more glenallen hill things from wiki that I remember pretty vivdly Once hitting a home run that landed on the rooftop of a building across Waveland Avenue behind the left field side of Wrigley Field. It is believed that this is the only time a home run has landed on the roof of any building neighboring the outfield bleachers of this ballpark. During another game as a Cub at Wrigley Field, he hit another home run that landed on Kenmore Avenue past a building across the street—a truly "Kingmanesque" blast, one of the longest if not the longest hit to left field in Wrigley Field history. [/ QUOTE ] You mention "Kingmanesque". thought Kingman might have hit one or two on the rooftop before. I had on audio-tape the famous Phils/Cubs 23-22 game from 1979 featuring 2 HR's from Mike Schmidt and also 3 dingers from Dave Kingman. Wind was blowing out that day obviously. Thought I remember one of the Phillies announcers saying that one of the HR's landed on the building across the street. But he might have just said it hit OFF the building. Can't remember. One blog article about the game I saw had one commenting that he was at the game and that Schmidt hit one over the apartments across the street. But I thought it was Kingman who I heard did this in the radio broadcast. The game is archived on MLB.com but I don't feel like listening to the audio right now to confirm what they said about the HR. Any Cub or Phils fan might have a fun time lisatening to this one though. Harry Kalas' voice wasn't quite as low in 1979. link to mlb.com archive of the game |

Bob,
Some people aren't as excited by guys fouling off a bunch of pitches as they are by walk off home runs. James |

I haven't read the thread, but I hope someone mentioned Reggie against Bob Welch in the '81 WSOB. You could've heard a pin drop outside in my neighborhood, and everyone at school was talking about it the next day.
Baseball doesn't do that much anymore. |

Bob, Some people aren't as excited by guys fouling off a bunch of pitches as they are by walk off home runs. James [/ QUOTE ] I understand that. I guess I was thinking in terms of 'best' at-bats. But 'most exciting' at-bats as I now notice it says in the subject-line is probably closer to 'most exciting hits you've witnessed' which is where a lot of people are going with this. My bad on the misinterpretation. Carry-on. and keep those great hits/at-bats coming. I like reading about them. |

Re: Describe some of the most exciting at-bats you\'ve witnessed.
My most recent memory was a game from last year; Yankees-Braves at Yankee Stadium. Starters were Chien-Ming Wang and John Smoltz and we got a pretty good pitching duel. It was 2-2 heading into extra innings, and there we were frying in the right-center field bleachers. In the top of the 12th, Scott Proctor gave up a home run to Marcus Giles. But in the bottom of the 12th, Jason Giambi walked and A-Rod destroyed a Jorge Sosa pitch into left field ending the ballgame 4-3 in 12 innings. Best ending to a game I've been to. The game was on June 28th and that was A-Rod's 16th homer of the year...
Another nominee is when Clemens beaned Piazza in the head. We were so far up in the upper deck that we thought he fouled off the pitch. |

[/ QUOTE ] You're older than you think (and so am I)- it was the '78 Series (the year after Reggie's famous 3 HR game). And yes, that is definitely one of the most memorable at-bats of all time. Reggie didn't get cheated, anyway. |

Re: Describe some of the most exciting at-bats you\'ve witnessed.
I was at the game in August 05, Dodgers vs. Braves at Dodger Stadium, when Beltre hit a game tying home run in the ninth off of Smoltz, and then a game winning home run in the 11th (IIRC).
Kind of an obscure game, but his second AB you just knew he was going to hit a home run, kind of like Ortiz in parts of last summer. The fans were going nuts and chanting MVP, it was awesome. |

All I have to say is:
"And we'll see you.....tomorrow night!" Goosebumps every time I see it, and honestly, even while I'm typing this a little bit. |
