Re: Handguns
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] i.e., stopping someone without killing them [/ QUOTE ] This is a really dumb comment. If you are willing to shoot someone, you should be willing to kill them. Not "stop" them. [/ QUOTE ] I agree. If someone is coming at you with a weapon, some may be "stopped" by a simple flesh wound. Others could lose a limb and still come after you. "Shooting to wound" may work in the movies, but it doesn't always work in real life. |

If you are going to point a gun at another human being and pull the trigger you had damn well be doing it because you ware ready to kill them. After that you 100% want to be able to do that with maximum efficiency. If you are really in the situation where a gun is needed then you are way better off overgunned than undergunned. 9mm can certainly kill and is cheap and easy to shoot. A .22 can kill a person very effectively as well but the difference it the stopping power of a larger more powerful caliber. If you are going to have to shoot someone you want to hit them hard and stop them right now. A larger caliber is more likely to do this vs. a smaller one like a .22 or 9mm. |

[ QUOTE ]
Well, I suppose if you're going to move up anyway, a .22 would be hard to beat if you want a cheap shooter. Whatever you buy, you should spend a lot of time shooting it to get familiar with how it handles. [/ QUOTE ] QFT RUger Mark 3 for semi-automatic, most any colt or S&W for a revolver. |

Re: Handguns
[ QUOTE ]
My dad wants to get a .22 target pistol. He's really experienced with rifles and shotguns, but we're both clueless as to pistols. Thoughts on the Ruger Mark III? Seems like a decent entry level gun, and I think it looks sweet. [/ QUOTE ] Good choice. DO NOT TAKE THIS PISTOL APART. You'll be taking it to a gunsmith in pieces. |

[/ QUOTE ] There's a difference between being willing to kill someone and practically guaranteeing it. [/ QUOTE ] Assuming you're a normal citizen (not a hitman), the only time you'll pull a gun on someone and pull the trigger is when they are coming at you with a deadly weapon. You want to prevent them from using the deadly weapon on you. If you shoot their knee or foot, will they stop? Maybe or maybe not. (Depends on their toughness and if they're on drugs.) Shoot them in the hand, maybe they'll drop the weapon. But can you really shoot a small target like the hand? So what do you do? Shoot them in the chest until they stop coming at you. It might kill them, but it's probably the only way to prevent them from killing you. |

Re: Handguns
The best first gun would be a .22 like the Ruger Mark III or the Browning Buckmark. You can learn to shoot properly with minimal recoil, so you don't develop a flinch, and the ammo is dirt cheap. Second best first gun would be a 9mm if you are into automatics, or .38 special if you dig revolvers. What's neat about a .357 magnum is that you can start off shooting lower recoil, and cheaper, .38 special ammo, and work up to .357 magnum in the same gun. But really, .22's are cheap and fun, and the best way to start learning correct technique.
