If I was in your position, I would raise his $10 bet on the flop to $30. It is very likely he is betting this flop with a medium pocket pair 33-77 to find out where he is at. If he calls your raise, you should most re-evaluate the turn card. Now in your case, when you just called, you didn't learn any new information about the hand. It's difficult to put him a hand such as A2, a bigger pair, top pair of 8s by just calling. When the ace hits, in both situations I would probably fire again, if you don't think it hit his hand. Checking the turn wouldn't be bad either, if you wanted pot control and sought to keep it small. On the river, if he checked, I would probably just check behind since you're getting no value out of your jacks. If he bets, evaluate how weak or strong his bet is and decide to fold or call accordingly
