.avi/.mpg to .mp4 converter

I'm obviously trying to put TVshows on my ipod. Is there a good/free converter that does this? A few quick searches led me to quite a few in the $30 range, but usually there's a freeware version for something like this. Anyone with experience doing this that can help?

I use this:

it's free, but make sure it's the only thing running on your computer at the time if your video is longer than 30 min. (ie. let it run overnight) otherwise the sound sometimes doesn't sync perfectly.
