How much of a disadvantage does it put you at, if any (in terms of EV) if you play a rebuy/add-on tournament, but opt out of doing either yourself?

An exact answer is obviously dependent on your skill advantage/disadvantage over the field, but in any event it would be a huge disadvantage. Imagine playing a freezout where you start with 1500 chips and everyone else with 5000. Sure, it costs you less, but because you have to double up twice more than does anyone else to win, the extra ROI you earn when you do make the money will be insignificant because of how much less you will make it to cash.

If add-on gives you more chips per dollar, then yes, it's terrible. If not....maybe still bad, but not as much surely.

Assuming you are a winning player and you have 11 bucks, I'm not sure it is worse to play a 11r as compared to a 11 freezout.
Of course your ev would be higher at least adding on. Heck maybe that was not the question you asked. |

I say this because people are much more likely to play wildly in the rebuy especially before the rebuy/addon. In that first hour the chances are excellent that you can find a spot where you will be able to play for all your chips when you are a favorite... the same cannot be said for a non-rebuy where people play more sane. |

Ya, I'm not sure, my gut says roi will be higher in the freezout just because even if you double up in the r you will be shallower than other players.
otoh, the prize pool will be larger in the rebuy. cliff notes: i have no clue. |

[/ QUOTE ] Perhaps true in the 215 rebuy but no other. Have you played in a $10 freezout lately? If you can't find at least 5 spots in the first half hour to get it all in ahead, you must have been preoccupied trolling myspace or for porn. |

roi def higher for a good/great player single rebuying in 11r then 11fo payoff so much better and the skill adv can overcome the chip adv enough.

I'm too lazy to do the math, but see chapter 29 of The Mathematics of Pokerby Bill Chen and Jerrod Ankerman for a relevant discussion which will aid in projecting a difference in EV from having a starting stack 3/10ths that of the rest of the field

I respectfully diasgree. Skill advantage may make it possible to get in the money nearly as often, but to make the FT and top 3, anyone's skill advantage, due in no small part to the fact excellent players like you will be in the rebuy, won't overcome this starting disadvantage often enough.
