Diablo is right, this is a pretty broad question: good place in NY for <$300.

A cuisine, neighborhood, atmosphere....or anything that narrowed down what you want would make it much more likely you'll get useful answers.

Since you mentioned steak in the post above, I'll throw Peter Luger out there as my favorite restaurant. It probably doesn't fall under the "nice" category for girls though. It has a very different feel than most really high quality restaurants. I'd call it less pretentious because I really like it, some may not prefer that though. For a fancier place, maybe check out Gramercy Tavern.
