NL 100: Overpair (QQ) in 4-way raised pot
This is a fairly common situation that I have a hard time with. I raise and get multiple callers, which bloats the pot size. The bloated pot causes post-flop dilemmas when I have top pair or an overpair, because betting the turn will pot commit me and not betting the turn sets me up to get outdrawn or outplayed (much more often than in a heads up pot).
Here's the hand. I have QQ utg, raise to 4x and get three callers. SHANAHAN is a 32/6/1.0/50hands and BDCASE is a 39/9/0.8/33hands. Absolute Poker: HOLDEM NO LIMIT $0.50/$1 ------Seat #1 is the dealer Seat 1 - RIVERFENIX ($107.15 in chips) Seat 2 - SLAH20 ($132.05 in chips) Seat 3 - SHANAHAN ($192.80 in chips) Seat 4 - HERO ($98.50 in chips) Seat 5 - BEARCAT351 ($191.85 in chips) Seat 6 - BDCASE ($142.50 in chips) SLAH20 - Posts small blind $0.50 SHANAHAN - Posts big blind $1 *** POCKET CARDS *** Dealt to HERO [Qd Qh] HERO - Raises $4 to $4 BEARCAT351 - Calls $4 BDCASE - Calls $4 RIVERFENIX - Folds SLAH20 - Folds SHANAHAN - Calls $3 *** FLOP *** [3d 6c 7d] [pot size: ~$16] SHANAHAN - Checks HERO - Bets $13 BEARCAT351 - Folds BDCASE - Calls $13 SHANAHAN - Calls $13 *** TURN *** [3d 6c 7d] [8s] [pot size: ~$53 and I have $81 left] SHANAHAN - Checks HERO - ??? BDCASE - How about a shove here, since any solid bet will commit me anyway? I realize no worse hand will likely call and no better hand will fold, but there are a lot of river card I don't want to see. Also, would anyone have played the flop differently? Thanks! |

no i would shove here. their range is pretty wide and 56, 57 just picked up a redraw. that along with some middle-overpairs as likely hands is good enough for me to felt here.

Bet 40 call shove? I mean I suppose you could bet/fold like 31 but I don't really like that play. I think you should commit your stack here.

"pot size: ~$53 and I have $81 left"
I guess one way to look at it is if I am ahead 81/(81+53) = 60.4% of the time (which I think I am) then shoving will show an immediate profit. That doesn't necessarily make it the best option though I realize. How about checking with the intention of probably checkraising all-in if the button bets? If he makes it $25 or more, and the BB folds, then I'll have $81 left and the pot will be $78 or more. If the BB calls the button, even better (I still shove). If the BB checkraises the button, I can fold. If the button checks behind me, I re-evaluate on the river. |

Re: NL 100: Overpair (QQ) in 4-way raised pot
I don't like a shove at all here,
67, 78, 89, 9T are all part of either players range, and you are ahead or 89 only from the 4 I listed, you are ahead of many hands such as A7 K7s etc. but in a 3 way pot, as you said, you are not getting called by a worse hand if you push, and the 8 is just a horrible card, I think it makes a lot of 2 pair hands and also the 9T straight. I would just check and evaluate river. (If the button checks also) It could be the case that the button bets and then first to act pushes and you can just make an easy fold. Anyway, I don't think you gain a lot from a push, and as you said you can bet/call or bet/fold, but you almost committ yourself with any reasonable sized bet, so it seems pointless when there is a big chance you are behind. |

Re: NL 100: Overpair (QQ) in 4-way raised pot
In the actual hand, I decided to check the turn with the intention of probably checkraising the button all-in if it felt right, but the button checked behind, which was okay too.
The river also got checked through and I won against 74s and KJs. The KJs flopped a flush draw and an over to my QQ. So I had to dodge about 17 outs between the two opponents on that river. |
