Default Counterintuitive Strategy

Last night I sat at a 2/4 table where one player was a tag I had played with before. The other 4 players were all seeing the flop more than 50% and one was seeing the flop 75% and would raise any bet made preflop or on the flop. He went to SD 67% of the time. The 4 of them would stay in with any piece of the flop and any draw even a busted flush or straight to show down.

I found myself going against my usual play and started limping with unsuited connectors, one gappers, any paint, any suited. I felt since I was getting 4-5 to 1 on my $$ just to see a flop I might as well. I did raise premium hands pre flop like I would have under normal conditions.

While this worked in the short run I am concerned that in the long term loosening up on tables like this and just limping to see cheap flops is a recipe for disaster. Any thoughts?

I think you should loose up a little preflop if your at a table with many multiwaypots. Just don't overdo it an start playing any crap. Just add some good multiway-hands to your usual starting hands.

I didn't see that there was a frequent raiser at the table when I first read this. So this means there is a lot of multiway pf-raised pots i guess. At this table I would play some hands thats not standard if I'm late to act and think the odds are enough but open-limp with marginal multiway hands is not a good idea at this table.

Yeah the maniac was reraising any raised hands. I was only loosening up a little bit. I normally run 25% VPIP and I maybe took it up to 30% VPIP. Even this kind of goes against my natural instincts not to play too loose.

the old saw says: at loose tables tighten up and at tight tables loosen up; usually trying to outplay or outlag a lag can be more variance-causing and heartburn-inducing than anything else.
