Default Just want a dealer perspective, everyone is welcome though

As a dealer, when someone asks you if they forgot to tip you in a hand they won earlier, what are you supposed to say. If they did forget do you tell the truth, or do you find yourself in kind of a bind. I have noticed when people ask this at the casino I go to, if it is a regular they will just tell the truth because the players and dealers know eachother, but if it is a new face they almost never answer.

Another one of my questions is this. I have noticed that when dealers play on their nights off they always tip a ton compared to everyone else. Now this gets me to think that in a dealers eyes they dont make enough money from just the average tips, i just am a little confused about dealers tipping more, other than they are friends with eachother and like to spread around their money equaly, so thoughts on that.

Thirdly, how often do you get to play with the houses money and how does it work. I have seen guys who work the floor at the casino i play at get to just play with the houses money and i think they go 50 50 on the profit. Do dealers get this opportunity too? I met a guy who used to deal down in southern california and he said that he got paid min. wage to play 15/30 with the houses money.

More questions to come when i think of them.

Almost never. The last time I saw a shill (an employee playing the house's money) was in 2000 when I used a shill to help a game.

I'm not a dealer, but I frequently ask if I forgot to get them. I've never had one say "yes", even though I'm pretty sure there have HAD to have been times I asked it and had legitimately forgot.

Because the casino i play at as a rather small poker room with 2 ring games going at a time at the most. Late night, after the tourney has ended it is about 1 in the morning, often times the casino staff will play in the game so that it will be at least 5 handed so the game wont break and the bad beat jackpot can still hit.

That is an awkward situation about the tipping. Watching dealers when asked that, they tend to stop for a moment. Their silence is usually the answer.

Not sure what a real good response would be. Some may see them saying 'no' as soliciting(yes, there are idiots like that) which is why I think they may be apprehensive to respond that way unless they know the person.

Generally, them playing really has nothing to do with them dealing. Other than convenience of already being there or familiar with the room. Figure them like anyone else. Most just like to play. Would it make a difference if you saw them playing in another room?

Except many won't c/r in their own room. I understand why, but it kinda sucks that they have to feel that way.

what i was kinda trying to ask in that second question is maybe dealers tip a lot to other dealers, at least where i am from, because they dont make nearly as much money as everyone thinks they do.

I think that falls in line with why people who work on a restaurant wait staff tend to tip more when out to eat.

But it might have something to do with it. Some dealers take awhile to get established and just don't get the hours. In bigger rooms, they may be on the extra board for quite a while.

If someone asks if they forgot to tip I will answer them truthfully. You can't ask for a tip as a dealer (you can get fired for soliciting tips at my joint) but players want to stay on the dealers good side and not appear cheap if they forget while stacking a huge pot. I have also had many regulars give new players a hard time when they don't tip. After dealing in the main pit and getting stiffed so often I appreciate every dollar tossed my way but still never expect a tip.

When dealers play on their nights off and tip a ton I find there are a few reasons for this
- We appreciate a dealers effort more so we tip more frequently, not just when we are ahead.
- We play for entertainment, not profit, so tips aren't affecting any imaginary bottom line of winning.
- By tipping frequently it sometimes encourages others to tip as well because they don't want to appear cheap.
It isn't really a point of spreading around what we make because most of us make the same crappy wage, it is all just appreciation and getting others to tip. If I am playing in a tournament and get knocked out I will always wish everyone good luck and remind them to tip the dealers if they cash.

Finally, in my jurisdiction we can't play with house money or play in the casino we work at. Can't help you there.

Dan's 2 cents

Dan, that was very well spoken, all those things were sort of assumed to me but i am glad that it seems as though all the casino staff has the same view points. i am considering being a dealer for some extra money during the summer.

f a player asks if they tipped me I just say "yes, Thank You" whether they tipped me or not. The reason is that I have decided that its worth it to me to give up a couple bucks a night in order to avoid any appearance that I might be greedy enough to lie about asking for a tip. In my mind all it takes is for one person watching this exchange to think that the player did tip me when I say "no" (even if they are mistaken) for word to get spread of dishonesty. Interestingly there are a few players who have realized what I do and they will ask me if they tipped me, and when I tell them they did they will call me a liar and toss me a tip.
