Even if you realize thats a cover, I cant ever imagine my top 10 including a cover. If you havent written the song, you dont deserve much credit.

And just to segue, I'll use that as my list's jumping-off point:

Hendrix - "All Along the Watchtower"
Bob Dylan - "Visions of Johanna"
The Beach Boys - "God Only Knows"
The Beatles - "Strawberry Fields Forever"
Van Morrison - "Astral Weeks"
Big Star - "Thirteen"
Derek and the Dominoes - "Layla"
Love - "Alone Again Or"

That's the first eight off the top of my head, and it's pretty much "rock and roll made by white people (except Arthur Lee) between 1966-1971". If I really put in the effort, I could do a better job expanding on genre and time period; or at least, make a list that doesn't contain "I'll Be Missing You".

I agree, Hendrix's version was terrific. But if you're making a list of greatest songs, I dont see how you can give someone credit for the song when they didnt even write it. Im not saying a cover cant be better than the original, but to be given credit, I think it requires actually writing the song, thats all.

i'm giving jeff buckley credit for his version... which in my opinion, is one of the best songs ever. i don't think that leonard cohen's original version is one of the best songs ever.

What? How does that work? You may have liked Buckleys performance better for whatever reason, but the composition of the song, being the melody and the lyrics, have stayed the same. So how can you give credit to Buckley and not to Cohen? For the greatest song, that is. NOT performance.

in my opinion, a different version is a different song. i'm sorry if you disagree. leonard cohen's recording just isn't as good. all the respect for writing it, but his recording is mediocre. just like dylan's recording of "all along the watchtower" usually doesn't strike people as much as jimi hendrix's.

oh, and i'm glad you like "st. andrew's fall," fyc. i used to listen to that on repeat. a lot.
