Video tape it and give the tape to the police. Stealing mail is a federal offensive, you arent going to need to try and black mail the theif, when the law comes down on him hes going to be [censored] his pants and begging to give you your stuff back. Also any scenerio involving your friends and you confronting him is bad, especially if it involves you detaining him until the cops show up, legally he could press kidnapping charges against you, plus you run the risk of some kind of confrontation which is -EV no matter how it ends up.

So basically, just video tape it, and call the cops.

what are the cops going to do with the tape? Put it on the news? Think again. Cops can be extremely useless in situations like this. I think Veganmav should clal a detective agency or private security firm to make sure they get arrested.

I would say involve the cops, but I doubt they are going to sent out a plainclothes team, and a cruiser will deter the perp 100% of the time. There's also a good chance they won't come.

Calling a private security firm will at the very least help inform hero of his legal options. If it's legal for you to do some kind of citizens arrest, just get someone with a wrestling or brazilian jiu jitsu background involved to pwn villain without causing any real damage.

The prospect of getting your old stuff back should not be a major motivation here. They are almost certain to have sold it.

Also, if you try to blackmail them, are you seriously going to be able to deal with the logistics of that? You'll have to drive villain home and escort them in your car. Holding onto their drivers liscense might help you out, but even then, this person could easily already have a warrant out for their arrest and not give a [censored]. What if there is someone at their home with a gun or a knife?

catch the thief and either kick the crap out of them or call the cops. don't do both.

videotaping won't do that much good. if you want to be able to press charges you need to catch them.

Deliver some kind of GPS thingy and find out where the the thief lives. Break in and steal your stuff plus extra things as compensation, obviously.

Are you people all idiots? He's stated that one package needed confirmation that it was received, but nobody in the house ever got it. Not only is it obvious that the thief has signed for packages already, I don't think I've ever been asked for ID when signing for something. Seriously, has the UPS guy ever carded anyone?

vegan,

I like the idea of sending a package to yourself and videotaping the thief stealing it. Then you can go to the police with evidence in hand. Hopefully, however you get there, once the police arrest the thief you can get your stuff back. Honestly, I don't see anything other than two routes: either your stuff has been sold, or the thief still has it. If its sentimental and not really valuable, hopefully the thief hasn't been able to dump it for a good price, and you'll get it back.

Good luck.

I like the idea of hiring a private-detectve to try to find this person and/or take photos of them in the act either at your house or somebody else's.
Sounds like they might stroll through the neighborhood daily doing this.

The other option is for you to sit outside in your car and watch for them but it could take awhile before they head back home for all you know.

By the way - this person really sucks.
