Default Vegas Advice for the Tight-fisted Types?

I am headed for a weekend in Vegas for the first time since 2004 and wanted to stay and play on or near the strip. The only time I can go is in mid/late June which means I get to contend with the WSOP.

I am looking at summer + weekend + WSOP + the strip. Sounds pretty -E .

Have you ever gotten a good deal in this situation?

Is it possible to find rates less than 100$ per night?

Can you get the elusive poker rates at these peak times? (6 hours of 3-6 is fine with me, who needs sleep anyway?)

Are poker rates generally better than fishing in the deep sea of online travel sites?

Any suggestions as to where?

Would renting a car save money in the end?

Does thinking this much about travel indicate inherent pyschological deficiencies that render me unfit for gambling ?

Thanks in advance for any stories you can tell.

Yes, deals can be had, we are going for 10 days in mid June for the WSOP and have gotten some good hotel rates. You should be able to find something close to what you are looking for.

Best rates are often on hotel websites so check them out, places like the Imperial Palace might fit your budget.

Yes you can get poker rates this time of year, but you have to do a little work checking posted rates. In the end, depending on where you stay, the quoted room rate may be equal to or very close to the poker rate. Most of the nice hotels have poker rates(Bellagio, Wynn, Venetian but they will cost more than you want to pay). allvegaspoker.com should have info. on poker rates.

I wouldn't bother with a car if you are sticking close to the strip and saving money is important to you. I like to walk almost everywhere on the strip(even in June.)

$100/night isn't a problem now except on weekends. Check out the Gold Coast for low weekday rates. If you want to keep it under $100 on the weekend, you'll probably have to go downtown or off the Strip.

I generally can get better prices online without getting the poker rate. I doubt you'll get a rate at the Rio, Wynn or Bellagio for under your $100 price so I'd recommend checking out rates online. Booking direct is typically cheaper.

Wow, that is interesting.

Say I wanted to stay at a smaller place like The Sahara. Do you think direct booking is cheaper than a poker rate or deal fishing?

The best way I've found to get rooms cheap is through Harrah's Best Rate Guarantee. D-FENS from 2p2 is an expert at this. Harrah's beats any third-party price by 25% for any Harrah's hotel (Rio, Flamingo, Caesar's, Paris, Bally's, Harrah's).

There are detailed directions here . First, find the cheapest rate you can through hotels.com, worldres.com, tripres.com, orbitz.com, wherever, for the days you want and the Harrah's property you want. Do NOT book through the 3rd-party site. Then, book a room at one of the Harrah's properties through harrahs.com at the rates on the harrahs site. IMMEDIATELY make a screenshot of the site with the lowest rate, follow the directions on the Harrahs BRG site, and fax it to the BRG folks. They confirm the lower rate, then within 72 hours you'll get an email with the new rate of 25% cheaper than the 3rd-party site.

I used it for a Saturday-Sunday-Monday stay at the Flamingo in August. I booked it on harrahs.com for like $436. 3rd-party (worldres I think?) was about $315. BRG made it $236, so $80/night for the Flamingo, including a weekend. (I could've gotten the Harrah's hotel for even cheaper, but I needed the Flamingo pool for my fiancee to stay occupied). Granted, August is not WSOP time, but you should still give it a shot.

Go to a site like Priceline, travelocity, expedia, give the dates of arrival/departure and you'll be able to scan for rates at Las vegas casinos. Generally they are all in the same ball park price.

Now that you know what hotel and price, go to the website of the hotel and make your reservation. You'll usually find it to be a little cheaper at the website and at 3rd party places you;ll have to pay in advance for the whole stay. I believe there is no refund but possibly a credit. If you go through the website you generally have a 72 hour cancellation policy and only have to pay for the first day when the reservation is made.
