There have been a lot of songs that could be legitimately nominated here, but this one is special because it eptiomizes something I hate hate hate about the popular music of the early 2000s: "Punk" bands (i.e. no-talent hacks who know three chords and have a record deal) covering really good songs and making them terible by stripping out all the nuance and detail and craft for a three-chord novelty rock song. That horrible band that covered "Boys of Summer" around the same time also falls into this category. And Me First and the Gimme Gimmes have made a career out of this dreck.
