The Muse.
Best band out there by far. One of the most talented bands I've seen in a long time. By far the best 3-piece (although someone recently told me they picked up a road keyboardist). I have no idea why this band hasn't WTF-E'sploded all over the world. I've been a fan for 4 years or so, and when they've come to town it's gone from a club whose circuit breaker couldn't keep up with their gear, to stadiums... so they've gotten somewhat bigger.

i have to agree with the others, Rush, Mellencamp and Dire Straits have all been critically acclaimed at some point in their careers.

yeah i considered zevon a marginal addition to the list, i think a lot of people from my generation (in their twenties) don't really know who he is, and other than "Werewolves of London" he doesn't get any radio play

I'm not really sure how Phish isn't considered great. You may think they're a bunch of dirty hippies but their musical greatness cannot be denied.
