30 60 canterbury turn spot
Late night at canterbury. I was not actually villain in this hand... i wouldnt play several of the streets how he did, but it is a very very interesting spot i think.
It is 9 handed, Hero is in the hijack with 55, folded to hero who raises. CO calls, Button calls, SB calls, BB three bets, all call. Flop comes 983 rainbow, checked to hero who bets, CO raises, sb calls 2 bets, bb calls 2 bets, hero calls. Turn 5, putting 2 clubs up there. so the board is 9c 8 3 5c Checked to hero, who checks, CO bets, button raises, sb folds, bb three bets, hero... |

Hero should call down or fold. I feel he is behind to CO or button's higher trips. I couldn't fold it though. I'll guess BB has AA/KK.

The only thing that matters is increasing your chance of winning it. A raise makes it two bets to the CO and may get him out, which is worth a bet if it increases your winning chances by even 5% in what looks to be a final pot of more than 20 big bets. Just call on the river if you don't fill up. |

Re: 30 60 canterbury turn spot
I don't see a raise getting the CO out, BUT it might slow down the river action if you've decided to go all the way.
I'll revise - fold or raise. Is folding really retarded here? |

[/ QUOTE ] Yes, folding is retarded. Folding sets in big pots has to be a long term loser. In fact, if you are going to fold situations like this then I'd advise not ever playing any small pocket pairs as situations like this is where they derive all of their value. Folding the pocket fives preflop would not have been retarded. This looks like a loose aggressive game. He is first in from mid position. In this spot he'd like to be coming in for one bet following some limpers. In games where lots of players cold call (thus giving almost no fold equity) a preflop raise with this has to be detrimental. Small pairs play best when you get in cheap against many players. The preflop raise increases the cost and may limit the field, both bad things with this type of hand. In a loose passive game the pocket fives may be a good limp, but I think that Miller advises against such in his book if nobody has yet entered the pot and I'm pretty sure Sklansky advised the same in his book. |

I've reread the hand a few more times and you guys are right. I should have thought about it more before posting.

Re: 30 60 canterbury turn spot
55 looks great until the flop comes and your chance of having an over pair is about zero. Looking to steal and getting 3 bet is poker time.
CO's flop raise could mean anything, as could BB's coldcall. I'd 3 bet the flop, call a cap and fold the turn UI. I'd like that turn card a lot and folding is out of the question. |
