Re: 2+2\'s Lead Guitar Players, Help Please.
he used to endorse (maybe still endorses, i havent played for a while) Tonebone pedals. The Tonebone Classic has a Fenderesque distortion, and the Hot British sounds more like a Marshall.
The Guv'nor gives nice round lead tones with 'buckers, have you heard Gary Moore? |

Re: 2+2\'s Lead Guitar Players, Help Please.
The Big Muff can make a very round lead tone, but if you want a pedal that emulates the sounds of a real rock amp the muff isn't really it. I had one for a while and never really used it because it sounded cheesy to me. It's definitely not an all-purpose distortion pedal.

Re: 2+2\'s Lead Guitar Players, Help Please.
IQ89,
I like modified tubescreamers, but they're probably not the sound you're looking for. BTW, Brian May's guitar tone is out of this [censored] world, but I know what you mean by "boxy sound": it's basically your [censored] petal cutting some frequencies it shouldn't be doing. I've always been kind of a fan of the Boss DS-1 that someone else recommended. Give it a shot at a local store -- it's cheap and readily available. There are tons of different pedals, but I don't want to get too deep into it because I'm assuming you're a beginner. Honestly, I think getting a POD is not a bad idea. It's not going to have any mind-blowing sounds, but there's a wide variety of different patches that you'll get to play around with to expose you to all sorts of tones. You'll probably get a better sense of what you want and where to go from there. Really though, here's my hardcore advice that would make astroglide roll in his grave: build one of these. |

Line 6? yuck. [/ QUOTE ] Consider the amp he's using now. A Line 6 Flextone II would be 10x better. Even a Line 6 Spider would be better. The Tech21 amps are decent too. |

Re: 2+2\'s Lead Guitar Players, Help Please.
Has anybody used the MXR EVH Phase 90 (Eddie Van Halen Phase Shifter)? Does it give a swirling flanger-type sound, or is it just a distortion pedal (or neither)?
also, what sound does a compressor create? |

Re: 2+2\'s Lead Guitar Players, Help Please.
Hi,
all depends on how serious you are with your playing and in which kind of environment you play. You don't really need full stacks if you aren't the next Slash or Kerry King. Even for them it all is for mojo. Combo or head + 4x12-cab will be enough in every situation. Few possibilities for consideration: $$$ JCM/JPM combos 30-50W (or JCM800 head+cab) $$ Laney combos (or G50L head+cab) $ Crate Powerblock + cab Lose the pedals and try the following: Proco Rat Big Muff DS-1 SD-1 (if you have a tube amp) Tubescreamer (if you have a tube amp) Before bying anything try them with _your_ guitar and _your_ amp. ps. go for used equipment pps. http://www.harmony-central.com/ |

[/ QUOTE ] Well if the EVH Phase 90 isn't drastically different from a stock Phase 90, the sound is much more subtle than what you get from a flanger pedal and sounds more natural/organic /whatever you want to call it. It is definitely not a distortion pedal. It's somewhat like having a wah pedal slowly rocking back and forth but not quite the same. It creates fewer overtones and harmonics compared to the sound you get from a wah pedal. Hope this makes sense. If you set a Phase 90 to the fastest setting it sounds kind of like a vibrato or tremolo pedal, only much muddier. Think "Down by the Seaside" from Physical Graffiti. I belive that in Lenny Kravitz's "Are you Gonna Go My Way" the bridge going into the solo is played through a phaser pedal set to a slow setting, where the tone gradually shifts. A compressor pedal compresses the signal and I guess gives you a thicker and smoother sound. Compressors are nasty in my opinion. If you don't have a well grounded setup they will cause serious squeal too. |
