In my experience, inside academia there are only a few things that can get you fired. This is usually one of them. Faculty/staff dating tuition-paying students is a no-no.

this is actually often not true. at columbia the only rule is that they are 'discouraged,' but if it DOES happen you just have to completely abstain from any academic or professional decisions regarding the student.

I guess it's different where I am. There are pretty serious rules about this stuff here, even for positions where you'd really never have any interaction with the student.
