[ QUOTE ]
it turns out i will be interacting with a couple black people - one male, one female at work as part of a ig project. i guess that's not too unusual for most people, but for me, having grown up in an upper class environment, i have had alwmost no dealings with black people in a social or professional way (except store clerks, etc.) [/ QUOTE ] They let black people be clerks where you live? WTF? [ QUOTE ] so i was wanting to educate myself on the black experience with a book or movie/documentary - i prefer the latter. but when i think of black lifestyle movies, it's all about gang bangers and rap stars. these people i will be dealing with are more normal middle class people who went to college, live in the suburbs, etc. so are there any movies on this class of black people that would help me? [/ QUOTE ] Suggest renting "Don't Be a Menace In South Central While Drinking Your Juice in Da Hood." And don't be dissin' middle class brothas and sistas...they can also keep it real. Either rent that or "Roots." GL. ScottieK |

joecash,
Not really many black people like that around, most are either lower class rapper/drug dealer types (see Boyz N the Hood, New Jack City, etc.) or really rich (Fresh Prince of Bel Air) or both (see Jay Z / Puff Daddy / etc). Your best bet if you're serious about educating yourself here is to grab some DVDs of the Cosby Show. They are still sorta upper class, but should at least give you some good ideas/strategies on how to deal with middle class blacks. |

Joe,
I know a middle class black person, perhaps I can set up an interview with him or maybe an ASK ME thread? EDIT- My black person would like to point out that he's half asian (like that counts, lol) and that given his income he is a relative upper class black person but a lower class asian. |
