Re: Violence and Videogames
[ QUOTE ]
I know that videogames weren't blamed here, but if you have time you might find it useful to read about the British case of James Bulger, where a pair of 10 year-olds abducted and murdered a 2 year-old toddler. Here, the horror movie 'Child's Play 3' was used as a scapegoat for the boys' actions. Whenever this issue is discussed, I always remember a brilliant line that Wes Craven penned for his film 'Scream': "Horror movies don't create psychos...horror movies only make psychos more creative". [/ QUOTE ] Thanks for the link, and the quote. That's definitely a genius line. |

Re: Violence and Videogames
[ QUOTE ]
Stupid people try to find someone to blame when kids blow a gasket and it's much easier to blame video games or Judas Priest than bad parents or uninterested teachers or someone with an actual name. [/ QUOTE ] Or just that the kid was screwed up and could've been set off by anything. It's just unfortunate that a certain video game won the lottery to be blamed. But hey, Ted Bundy blamed porno. That set off a whole mess of crap. Funny they(conservos) only listen to a maniac when they hear something they want that they can use to try and restrict something. b |

Re: Violence and Videogames
It certainly has an effect. I know it's not video games, but when we were younger, whenever my brother/friends and I watched a movie with violence (3 ninjas for example), we would always get riled up. We would start beating each other up all the time, and someone always ended up crying. This is probably considered relatively normal male childhood behaviour though, and I am less convinced of the link with more extreme violence.

Re: Violence and Videogames
I work in videogames and am pretty anti the whole "videogames = violence" thing, HOWEVER I've been over to friends houses where their like 8 year old kids are playing Grand Theft Auto and saying to each other "no dude, you should have sex with the hooker then run her over and take your money back" , and you have to think that kids that young are totally affected because they haven't really developed their own concept of right & wrong and even reality vs. fantasy.

Re: Violence and Videogames
here's a quote from marilyn manson from his rolling stone article after the columbine shootings. it pretty much sums up my thoughts on it.
"I think that the National Rifle Association is far too powerful to take on, so most people choose Doom, The Basketball Diaries or yours truly." http://www.rollingstone.com/news/sto...se_fault_is_it |

Re: Violence and Videogames
I do not believe violent video games cause violent behavior.
Kids who have violent tendencies/thoughts are drawn to violent video games. This does not mean, however, that everybody who likes violent video game is violent by nature - I love violent video games and I have never been in a fight or fired a gun in my life. |
