Downloads/file transfers freezing?

First of all, if this isn't the right forum for this question I'm sorry.

Anyway, onto the problem. Over the past 1 month-ish, any time I try to download a file or send/receive a file from someone on AIM or MSN, the transfer freezes. I haven't changed anything or got any new programs, this just randomly started happening. I used to be able to transfer/download files all the time, but then out of nowhere they started freezing and I'm not sure why. Any help or suggestions are appreciated, thank you.

does it download at all, or freeze partway through?

It starts the download, but then freezes at a random time. Sometimes it's halfway through, sometimes its right in the beginning, and sometimes it's right before it should finish.
